SAPIENS: Inspired by human evolution

Xavier Garcia, the Barcelona-based designer, launches the new brand, SAPIENS, drawing inspiration from the diversity and complexity of nature. The line launches with seven models that define the baseline of the SAPIENS philosophy, founded on a study of paleontology and human evolution and an approach to the design of frames based on “turning rare shapes into wearable frames”.

The starting point of the design process is the orbital spaces of different skulls, the designer explains. “We began drawing the orbital spaces, as well as the main lines that shape the craniums of all specimens that belong to our direct line of evolution: Australopithecus afarensis, Homo habilis, Homo erectus, Homo neanderthal, Homo heidelbergensis. Each skull is different, with its own particular orbital and cranial volumes, and every single skull suggests a wide range of shapes and volumes. Particular details are closely linked to the studies into human evolution with patterns on temples reproducing human fingerprints and a colour palette inspired by the cave paintings at Altamira (Cantabria, Spain).

The frames are produced in Italy using premium and eco-friendly materials including Mazzucchelli bioacetates. The line features sunglasses with Tokai sun lenses offering superior clarity and minimal chromatic distortion, providing a sharp and precise vision.
