SAPIENS brand recognised at SILMO

SAPIENS brand recognised at SILMO SAPIENS is highlighting the ER-1813 M sunglasses in its collection, which won the Silmo D’Or Special Jury Prize at SILMO in September. The SAPIENS collection was born from “a free design exercise inspired by the most representative skulls in human evolution”. Each piece in the collection draws inspiration from the skull of a specific hominid. The model which was awarded the Silmo d’Or takes its inspiration from the skull of Homo habilis KNM-ER1813. The distinctive design of this model was directly shaped by the skull—the brow volumes and the form of the eye sockets inspired a “sun mask” style frame, with the added intent of allowing opticians to insert prescription lenses. The result is eyewear with a bold personality—daring, original, innovative, and extremely comfortable, the brand states. Made of bio-acetate, and sculpted to very thin thicknesses on the front, the frame features beta titanium temples for lightness and flexibility and titanium nose pads. All titanium parts are presented in a raw finish, without galvanic treatments.

Sapiens’ designer Xavier Garcia said: “I like emphasizing this “raw finish,” because one of the underlying ideas behind the collection is to propose objects stripped of artifice—simple, distilled forms that translate the shapes and volumes present in skull bones into eyewear. I have always thought the final result feels profoundly human, as we morphologically belong to that evolutionary lineage, and SAPIENS frames are directly created from our ancestors. In a way, with SAPIENS we transform part of the paleoanthropological heritage into contemporary eyewear. SAPIENS turns design into a form of cultural expression—a unique approach that, just one year after its launch, has been recognized with the most prestigious award in the international optical industry.”
