At MIDO 2024, the first certification – CSE “Certified Sustainable Eyewear” programme for sustainable products was announced by ANFAO and Certottica.
Conceived, registered and promoted by ANFAO, the National Association of Optical Goods Manufacturers in Italy, in collaboration with CERTOTTICA, the certification is expected to become the new standard for product sustainability in the world of eyewear by certifying the complete product and all its components: raw materials, fronts, temples, lenses, small metal and plastic parts.
After an initial study phase that saw the collaboration of ANFAO, Studio Fieschi and CERTOTTICA together with the companies of the Association’s Technical Commission, the programme was tested on five companies in the sector of different types and sizes through a pilot test that then allowed the project to start.
The certification identifies products that are preferable from a sustainability perspective. It was created voluntarily and is based on the UNI EN ISO 14020 and UNI EN ISO 14024 standards, aimed at all Italian and international companies in the sector that will apply to join the program starting today.
The CSE label will be granted by Anfao in relation to a series of specific evaluation criteria for the sector that take into account all the phases of the life cycle of the product (resources extraction, raw materials, production, distribution, use and disposal).
The evaluation will examine environmental, social, economic and technological factors and these criteria will be updated periodically in relation to technological development and market needs.
The CSE will allow for European and international policies on the subject of environmental sustainability of product to be anticipated; it will also monitor production processes and suppliers, whilst being an active part in the change of course of the sector towards sustainability, enhancing its “sustainable” product offer through a programme recognized by the whole eyewear sector.
A new website about the certification has been launched for further information.
