Rodenstock has presented a new corporate philosophy: B.I.G. VISIONTM FOR ALL – Biometric Intelligent Glasses™. The Munich-based company is initiating what it describes as “a paradigm shift in individual progressive lenses through the recognition that every eye is different”. The lens manufacturer is known for its focus on measuring the individual eye, using data points to produce glasses integrated with biometric intelligence for sharp vision. “At Rodenstock, we determine the biometrics of the whole eye. This includes its length and several thousand data points in the eye – far beyond industry standards.”, says Anders Hedegaard, CEO of the Rodenstock Group. All relevant biometric data determined by the combination of the DNEye® scanner with patented technologies are integrated directly into the lens, orchestrating a construction process which results in a very precise lens. This biometric eye model enables Rodenstock to precisely hit the sharp vision centre of every individual eye. “This provides people with the sharpest vision possible at any angle or with every gaze, both in the glasses’ peripheral zones and at distances from mid, near and far,” says the company.

Q: WHY BIOMETRIC INTELLIGENT GLASSESTM?

A: In order to understand this technological development and the importance of utilising individual biometric data when constructing the lenses, one first has to understand the dynamic demands of the complete vision system and the fact that we see with our brain, not with our eyes says the company. However, until today a narrow mind-set has controlled the world of progressive lenses - and limited eye measurements.
“…this narrow mind-set has focused on understanding the eye just from the limited perspective of a standardised reduced eye model, and not from an understanding of individual eyes. This mind-set has left 98% of the world’s progressive lens users with glasses that don’t fit their eyes precisely.”, says Dr. Dietmar Uttenweiler, Head of Research & Development and Strategic Marketing Lenses. When combining the different standard parameters of the reduced eye model, such as eye length, spherical and astigmatic power of the cornea and anterior chamber depth, it ends up matching just 2% of eyes globally. Rodenstock therefore measures the precise data of each individual eye, creates a unique biometric eye model and uses this model to calculate a lens that matches each individual person to the micrometre.

Q: B.I.G. VISION™ GIVES PEOPLE BIG BENEFITS

A: Rodenstock’s B.I.G. Vision with DNEye® Technology delivers a seamless, dynamic and natural experience that works perfectly together with the brain. B.I.G. Vision™ delivers up to 40% sharper vision at near and intermediate distances and an 8.5° wider field of sharp vision at near. When asked about their experience with Biometric Intelligent Glasses™ in a Swiss study, a high percentage of users experienced a wide-range of benefits to their vision. For example, 88 % of participants noticed greater visual comfort with their DNEye® glasses compared to their old glasses. 92 % experienced sharper vision than before, 84 % experienced better contrast vision. 87 % experienced reduced adaption time.

Q: DIFFERENTIATION POTENTIAL

A: B.I.G. Vision™ from Rodenstock aims to enable opticians to differentiate themselves from their competitors. The new philosophy is designed to provide convincing arguments for selling high-quality progressive lenses – leading to more turnover and higher customer satisfaction.
