Innovation, the theme of MIDO 2018, continues to inspire leading eyewear trends and fresh design directions. The Milan fair highlighted a consistent growth in metal optical designs, specifically in stainless steel, titanium and beta titanium – and sometimes a mix of two in one design. Shapes are increasingly experimental: squares, cat’s eyes, multi-sided silhouettes and rounds and ovals are firm favourites for 2018, and the ‘frame within a frame’ concept is widely explored with surprising and impressive results. Colour is having an impact on lenses and frame designs in metal and acetate, where several tones or patterned effects might appear together. Understated hues and softly tinted crystals sit side by side splashes of bright primary colours, neons and more muted olive greens, natural blues and greys.
ROCA from the Signature Collection by FLEYE COPENHAGEN: a new sunglass design exploring two shapes, one superimposed on the other. The collection is inspired by smørrebrød creations by the Danish chef Rasmus Kjaer made using lobster and mackerel along with other seasonal ingredients. www.fleye.dk
Modern, clean and refined: EVATIK launches 5 new styles for Spring 2018. Drawing inspiration from European eyewear trends and architectural design elements, the new styles combine top quality materials, unique constructions and pops of colour creating a minimal and contemporary masculine look. With a titanium mono-block square front, model E-9163 exhibits a metal inlay along the brow line for a sporty, shield look. Contrasting colorations of black/navy, black/charcoal and brown/black provide an added touch of style. Evatik is produced by WestGroupe.
Designed specifically for petite faces, NIFTIES aims to push boundaries of comfort by using ultra-thin stainless steel, which has exceptional flexibility, for a comfortable fit. The collection is exploring new colours with a special love for the warm, deep tones of amber, turquoise, duck green and grey blue elm. The deep colours are inspired by nature.
Model Arlequin is a new entry in Barton Perreira’s special Spring/Summer 2018 collection in celebration of 10 years of innovation and unique design techniques. The style highlights the trending black and white colour combo in a design utilizing enameling, ultra-fine beta titanium and radiant acetates. Inspired by fantasy, romance and nostalgia, the collection consists of 22 sunglass and optical frames in a variety of colorways in women’s, men’s and unisex styles.
Blackfin, the brand of titanium eyewear, has presented model ARC in a limited edition this month. This sunglass, winner of many international prizes and the star of the new 2018 campaign, is presented in a special edition of just 499 pieces in each of the three colour combinations. A new launch at MIDO, the collection includes model Rugiada, a combination design with a feminine cat eye shape. Attention to detail and the allure of the local identity are references in the MIC collection and an iconic element on the hinge replicates the unmistakable profile of the mountains where the frames are produced. Initially composed of 12 styles, 8 for prescription eyewear and 4 for sunglasses, MIC is designed for the evolved consumer, male or female, over 30, who chooses their eyewear with a discerning eye.
The French brand has announced the launch of an optical collection where each frame boasts an adaptable tinted clip equipped with VUARNET’s authentic mineral lenses. The 2-in-1 model can be worn either as classic glasses or with the tinted clip as soon as the first rays of sunshine appear. The fronts of the frames, made from 100% acetate or a combination of a steel structure enhanced with acetate rims, offer a wide range of sizes to suit any face.
Technical functionality is as important as the fashion styling of a pair of sunglasses. Italian company Barberini’s sunglasses collection proposes trend-led frame concepts fitted with glass lenses in Platinum Glass™.
Platinum Glass™ is a premium optical glass the name of which was inspired by the production process. The oxide mixture is melted in special furnaces and refined through a column of pure platinum, so as to obtain a glass lens free from all impurities. Oleophobic and hydrophobic treatments help to prevent dirt and fingerprint marks.
