Christophe Morcamp of Plein Les Mirettes, the French artisan eyewear label based in Normandy, spoke to 20/20 Europe about his new designs and aspirations for the year ahead.
Q: What did you release this year at SILMO and the most recent international events this month?
A: At Silmo, we presented 8 new models in acetate and 5 new combination designs. All our colours have changed; specific hues that are a particular feature of the brand are more and more noticeable in the collection. For the Hong Kong fair, we also offered a limited colour series. For this first participation in Hong Kong, we were fortunate to receive a warm welcome from buyers.
We met new customers from France, England, India, Japan, and Australia.
Q: What is your current direction in colour and new shapes?
A: In the last 2 years, the collection has evolved. It is more and more luxurious, elegant and focused on a couture style.
I must thank our clientele for this, as they have been the driving force for this direction. As a designer I have fun with experimental shapes and volumes. We have had to develop our own special tools to achieve the work I wanted in terms of volume and lightness. Our collections are both more sober and elegant, and certainly more "fun". We have had to increase the number of colours for each style to meet all our customers’ requirements.
Q: How is your expansion proceeding? We understand you are developing the brand in a number of regions, and not just in Europe? Asia is going well?
A: Our development is as organized as we had hoped at this point in time. We are expanding in the US and Canada.
At Silmo we signed a distribution agreement for Poland and we are dedicating much effort to growth in Asia.
Q: Plein Les Mirettes continues to focus on femininity and designs for women. How has the collection expanded and is it what you expected it to be at this point in terms of the styling and designs?
A: We continue to offer only women's models. I do not want to do other thing; I really like the idea of this specialization and I know that I’m good at it.
When we started in 2012, I did not think I would see such a quick development, particularly in terms of positive feedback about my designs and my colours, the comfort of the glasses and the image that we are lucky to have achieved.
When we started with 12 models in 4 colours, I did not expect to soon be offering more than 65 models in 6 colours - we are now renewing these designs every quarter.
Q: What outside influences can we see in your collection?
A: I am a strong believer in my country and my roots as being a part of what I do and how I do it. I'm also lucky to have a gypsy mum and a dad with Jewish origins. I therefore have a multi-cultural perspective when I design and I think this is beneficial.
I am fascinated by fashion and the catwalk shows, I love interiors, and I always try to anticipate trends. I speak as much as possible with my agents and our partner opticians. Above all else I follow my instincts and my desires!
Q: What are your plans for 2019?
A: We will continue to develop the availability of our collection in Asia, through a series of metal models. We are also expanding in Russia and restructuring our distribution in Italy and Australia.
You will find more models and more colours in our new lines, and we will continue to produce our designs just for women. Gradually you will see more metal introduced in the collection, but always with the unique style of Plein Les Mirettes.
